Interview with the CEO of Karolinska Development, Conny Bogentoft

We have one of the largest life science portfolios in Europe, adding 4 - 6 early stage companies every year. Our model enables us to finance projects as well as bring researchers together with experts who can assist them.

We work with a network of experienced professionals, particularly in setting up development strategies (at the core of the business model). They assist researchers and hence allow them to remain concentrated in their scientific field. We clearly target commercial development, and our efforts to assist innovation require outstanding competitiveness.

Our firm's 300 investors come from both the public and the private sector which makes our model quite unique.

With full knowledge of the companies in our portfolio and their markets, we can readily make decisions. A highly operational model in addition to the knowledge we have acquired along the way, have lead to very exciting results. Starting the first seed investments as recently as 2003, we hope to conclude the first partnering deals in the next 1-2 years.

Can you share some success stories with us?
We are still quite young, but three of the companies in our portfolio already have products on the market; four have entered Phase II and six Phase I. I think we will have an opportunity to present some of them at EuroBiO, as we will partake in the event as speakers in the conference sessions as well as in EuroBiO one to one meetings.

Why are you participating in EuroBiO one to one meetings?
We need events that will facilitate our encounter with academia and companies. It is necessary to create "opportunities for projects". EuroBiO is certainly on the right track. Today, the stakes for Europe, if we wish to be successful lies in finding funds and talent that can transform innovation into a breakthrough product.
