| EuroBiO organizes this year a series of conference-workshops specifically devised by and for clusters. Entitled "How do clusters concretely contribute to innovations?", this track is to put forward international collaborations set in motion by French clusters with their European and international partners. These partnerships often go back a long way, and bring about much operational outcome to share on either side. |

Atlantic Biotherapies: taking action now!
The story of international collaborations started a long time ago along the Atlantic coast. In 2003, Atlanpole was entrusted with the task of coordinating the European Biotech Crossroads (EuroBiO's former name), which then took a stronger step towards international collaboration. "Before the creation of competitive clusters, we had made a study to identify the clusters that showed enough common points with us to start up collaborations, explains Atlanpole and Atlantic Biotherapies head of communication Emilie Ménoury. This study had identified 10 potential partners. The screening was a success, since we are now developing projects with 8 of them: Madrid, ARESA in Belgium, BioAlps, Heidelberg, Milan, Leiden and Medcoast Scandinavia."
Atlanpole has a special relationship with Sweden. Therefore, French Ministry of Finance has entrusted Olivier Kitten and his teams with the organisation of a France-Sweden forum next June. Atlantic Biotherapies' challenge ahead: maybe getting the "global competitiveness cluster" label?
A word from Alsace Bio Valley general manager Nicolas Carboni
This thematic track is a good opportunity to show that clusters are the real mainspring of innovation. They give the impetus and help connecting the industrial world and academia. But innovation is a wide field whose components are hard to find in a single area. Thus, the aim of clusters is to support the composition of an innovation jigsaw, by connecting various specialities, on various locations.
Created in July 2006, the BioWin cluster brings together about 250 partners. With 6 new research projects and two training projects given official approval this month by the Walloon region, the cluster is reinforcing its expertise in the healthcare sector: cancer, inflammation and brain diseases. Let's meet Communication and international relations Director Frédéric Druck Today we realize that our selecting and backing of small and medium-sized enterprises is a success. The fact that they receive official labels confirms it. Beyond national requests for proposals, we also run transnational actions. The network we have set up at a European level helps us to find new partners. For instance, we have built with Lyonbiopôle a research platform in immunotoxicology to develop joint projects aimed at detecting very early on molecules prone to disturb the immune system. Each of us is making the most of our capacities, which are complementary. We are also working with other clusters, in a less formal way but with a real dynamic. It is notably the case with EuroBioMed or Atlantic Biotherapies, which are, like us, committed to the development of their SMEs. More generally, we belong to the CEBR network, which allows us to collaborate with Scandinavian or German clusters, for instance. It's a small circle, we all have the same targets and sometimes the same financing policy – I'm thinking about how Europe gives general support to clustering and innovating policies. So EuroBiO is a major event for us, since it enables us to meet all the contributors we regularly get in touch with And since we also need to open new horizons, we truly believe in intersectoral networking. We look closely at what's happening in nanomedicines, microtechnologies or in the food industry. Though this cross-fertilization is still operating at a national level, I think that we will soon be able to team up on a European scale. |
